The paper presents the threats to the environment posed by the expansion of the dye industry and related industries. Oxidizers that can efficiently decolorize dye-containing wastewater are listed. The effects of ozone, hydrogen peroxide, diammonium peroxydisulphate and Fenton?s reagent on the decolorization of aqueous solutions of 1:2 metal complex dyes are discussed. A mechanism for the reaction of oxidizing dyes with diammonium peroxydisulphate is proposed based on the results of chemometric analysis. Decolorization reaction rate constants are calculated.

Keywords: dyes, oxidation, wastewater decolorization, chemometric analysis
